The integration of physical education in early years primary Mathematics

This research aims at investigating the effectiveness of integrating PE and Mathematics in order to enhance the children's learning process. It examines what it presently being done and what can possibly be done to maximize the benefits of integrating the two subjects. The intent of this study is to examine the teachers' view and willingness to teach Mathematics through PE and to examine any possible challenges that they might encounter. The research approach adopted in this dissertation includes multiple qualitative methods. Twelve primary teachers, six PE teachers and 2 policy makers were interviewed. This phase was followed by the implementation of a Resource Pack that was compiled in order to test the effectiveness of integrating the two subjects. Teachers were subsequently asked to fill in a checklist concerning their views about the Resource Pack. Finally, the findings emerging from the checklists were further discussed in a focus group made up of primary teachers and physical educators. Results show that the integration of primary mathematics and PE is a learning strategy through which children benefit from. This study shows the success of such a learning strategy and the importance of having a balance between all subjects in the primary area so as to ensure holistic education for all. In this dissertation one will encounter the various elements which enhance integration of primary subjects and what can be done to promote such learning more successfully in primary schools around Malta.
