3D comic : integration of 2D and 2.5D elements into 3D

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study sets out to extract the key elements from 2D comic books, manga, 2D animation and 2.5D animation and combine the knowledge gained with the 3D media. The aim for this project is to blend the line between 2D and 3D and take comics to the next step. Breaking down the fundamentals of storytelling as well as the creative process of designing characters within a story and transitioning over into 3D, is what allowed the project to come to fruition. The character designs were used as a base for the creation of their 3D counterparts. Half way through the project, a focus group was introduced to gather feedback on the work done, which confirmed that the project was on the right track. Alterations to the work were made according to the feedback given and tests regarding the aesthetics of final projects were also done. This project was limited to a standard 16:9 display; however, with further developments down the road, it would certainly be able to make its next transition into Virtual Reality and continue to develop.
