The implementation of the new primary Physical Education syllabus in the local state schools

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Undoubtedly, Physical Education brings about many benefits which have many positive impacts if presented to students as from a very young age. Thus, this study sets to investigate the implementation of the New Physical Education syllabus issued in September 2005 for the primary years. Data was collected from questionnaires distributed to all Physical Education peripatetic teachers and interviews conducted with thirteen Heads of schools and two authoritative figures occupying the highest posts in the sector of Physical Education. Data gathered was analysed and linked with the related and significant literature. This study reveals fundamental issues regarding the main challenges in implementing the New syllabus, the importance of adequate and sufficient resources and facilities, the roles of peripatetic and class teachers, the need for more contact time and the necessity of piloting a syllabus prior to being published. Despite the fact that peripatetic teachers were involved in the designing of the New syllabus, a number of teachers are not implementing it and many are encountering difficulties when trying to put it into practice. This study sets to explore the benefits and challenges of the New implemented syllabus with reference to the perceptions, ideas, philosophies and reactions of the Physical Education teachers, Heads of school and prominent individuals in the field of Physical Education.
