These characteristics, with the exception of cover, were derived from measurements made using the wandering quarter method. Cover was computed from measurements made on aerial photographs.</p> <p>A test for homogeneity applied to the distance measurements divided the woodland into two groups relative to local distribution. Both woodlands are non-random with one (dense oak woodland) more non-random than the other, (grass oak woodland). Density per acre and percentage of foliage cover further supports this observation. Dense oak woodland is about twice as dense as grass oak woodland. There is a difference of 7 between the percentages of cover of the two woodlands.</p> <p>The woodlands consist chiefly of two species, coast live oak and the Engelmann oak. The ratios of one species to the other differs in the two woodland types. Engelmann oak is encountered nearly 90% of the time in grass oak woodland as compared to about 10% for coast live oak. The ratios of the two species is nearly 1 to 1 in dense oak woodland.
