Seasonal timing in different environments: comparative studies in Stonechats. Stonechats from four populations (Kenya, Sibiria, Ireland, Austria) were compared during their first year of life at the Max-Planck Research Centre for Ornithology in Andechs, Germany. They differed in temporal patterns of their seasonal behavior and in their reaction norms to important Zeitgebers (e.g., photoperiod). These differences were taylored to their native habitats, and there is evidence that they can rapidly be modified via micro-evolution. Implications for adjustment to changing seasonal conditions (climate change) are discussed.
