The collection of the subject was based on the idea that such a project would be of far more interest and value if an existing problem/ study area was used,rather than an academic consideration of some particular aspect of Parks and Recreation in New Zealand. Consequently, the Dept. of Lands and Survey, Christchurch was approached to see whether there was a project of suitable scale and content available which they would like to see undertaken. The Landscape Architecture Section of the Department were at that time working on the preparation of the Management Plan for Orton Bradley Park.
