Integrating SMED, preventive maintenance, and standardized work practices: a study of productivity gains in metalworking SMEs

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This article addresses the implementation of a production model in a small and medium-sized company (SME) in the metalworking sector with the use of tools such as Preventive Maintenance, SMED (Rapid Tool Change) and Standardized Work. The motivation behind this approach arises from the identification of problems related to productivity in production processes, specifically in relation to rework times, machine failure times and changeover times. The validation of this model is carried out in a company dedicated to the manufacture of chrome rollers through a pilot test, demonstrating the applicability of these tools in real production situations. The results obtained show a significant improvement in productivity, including notable reductions in changeover times, downtime due to failures, and rework caused by operators. This comprehensive approach offers an effective solution to address the specific challenges of the metalworking sector and improve the productivity of SMEs.
