Performance Guide of the two-piano version of Zhang Zhao Piano Concerto No. II “The Might”

AbstractThis paper focuses on the two-piano version of Zhang Zhao’s Piano Concerto No. II, “The Mighty,” examining its compositional features, performance considerations, and pedagogical applications. Born in an ethnically diverse region of Yunnan, Zhang Zhao’s music is deeply influenced by local folk traditions, which he skillfully integrates with contemporary compositional techniques. Originally commissioned by the Suzhou National Orchestra, the concerto was later adapted for two pianos to facilitate study and performance while retaining its core musical character and expressive depth, focusing on texture, articulation, and interpretive possibilities. This research aims to assist performers in mastering both the technical and expressive demands of the work. In addition, it situates the concerto within Zhang Zhao’s broader creative philosophy, demonstrating how his integration of ethnic musical elements, personal expression, and modern techniques contributes to the originality and cultural significance of his compositions. By providing practical guidance on interpretation and performance strategies, this study not only supports pianists in conveying the work’s musical essence but also enhances understanding of contemporary Chinese piano repertoire in the context of national musical heritage.
