In such reservoirs, conceptual models play an important role in generating understanding and predictive insights. Yet, predictions are only as good as the conceptual models. This work investigates the structural and stratigraphic controls on the deposition and early- to late-diagenetic evolution of the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) Akimpech Formation in the Campeche-Chiapas Subbasin, offshore Mexico and tests two dominant paradigms.","A first predictive paradigm is that the Akimpech Formation (AkiF), a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system, represents a homoclinal ramp model during a rift-to-passive-margin transition. This model is tested by exploring its depositional architecture through descriptions of 21 core segments, 137 hand samples, well logs from 16 wells, and stratigraphic and structural interpretation of a seismic volume covering 2,241 km2. The comprehensive analysis and interpretation are the basis to discern a) lithofacies and sublithofacies; b) spatial and temporal changes in lithofacies and stacking patterns in logs; c) changes in thickness, character of seismic reflectors, and seismic geometries. These data provide means to interpret water depths, environments of deposition, regional thickness and facies patterns, and ultimately, to determine relations between structural and stratigraphic features. These analysis reveals a spectrum of water depths (from intertidal to basinal) without geographically consistent shallowing-upward patterns or systematic lateral changes that would be expected on a ramp. Rather, the asystematic stratal patterns, thickness variations, and fault-associated sedimentary wedges suggest accumulation occurred on an evolving, irregular, marine substrate controlled by syndepositional structural deformation, associated with the development of independent depocenters. These Jurassic faults and sedimentary wedges are also interpreted to play an important role in the formation of the anticlines during Miocene compression, features that form hydrocarbon traps.","A second paradigm is the conceptual diagenetic model that invokes the role of burial fluids for dolomitization, an abundant, widespread, and important diagenetic phase in the CChSB. This work characterized the diagenetic events recorded in the AkiF to test this conceptual model. Petrographic observations (conventional, UV and CL) formed the basis to identify the paragenetic sequence and informed sampling strategy for δ18O and δ13C isotopic analysis on 332 microsamples. The isotopic analysis provides constrain on the relative time, depth and temperature at which precipitation of significant mineral phases could have occurred. This information helps in the determination and prediction of the quality and continuity as reservoir rock for distinct lithofacies within the Akimpech Formation.","These findings of the Kimmeridgian structural, stratigraphic and diagenetic processes in the CChSB contribute to understanding of the origin of depositional systems and reservoirs in tectonically complex settings. Ultimately, by investigating the earliest structural-stratigraphic interactions that controlled such heterogeneous mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system, their impact in subsequent diagenetic and tectonic evolution is reassessed. This highlights the importance of refining conceptual models that improve predictiveness in highly heterogeneous reservoirs."]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Syn-sedimentary tectonostratigraphic influence and isotopic δ18O and δ13C characterization of the Kimmeridgian Akimpech Formation, Campeche-Chiapas Subbasin (Campeche Sound), offshore Mexico."]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor.advisor":["Rankey, Eugene C","González, Luis A"],"dc:creator":["Cuapio-Perez, César Augusto"],"dc:date.accessioned":["2026-07-14T19:46:10Z"],"dc:date.available":["2026-07-14T19:46:10Z"],"dc:date.issued":["2026-05-31"],"dc:description.abstract":["Carbonate reservoirs are notoriously heterogeneous, with variability driven by both depositional and diagenetic controls.
