Composing Music for Worship

Composing music for worship in the twenty-first century is intriguing in that there are so many traditions, styles, genres and forms to draw on for inspiration. Even modern idioms (such as Contemporary Christian Music) have a history and tradition that one may study and emulate. As the culmination of the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Church Music, and with an additional cognate in Music Composition, the author (Mark Spencer Campbell) has chosen to compose eight works of sacred music, each drawing from and building upon well-established genres of sacred music. Emphasis is placed on the importance of immersing oneself in the history, style and formal analysis of such genres when seeking to add to the repertoire. Mention is also made of how one’s relationship with the audience influences a composer’s output.
