Modes of Interaction: Categorizing Collaboration in the Creation of New Music

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The creation of new music is shaped by an array of influences that affect how a piece is composed and performed. The majority of new music is created, modified, and amended over time and the collaborative interactions between the composer and the performer are a key factor in the creation of new music. Observing how these interactions influence the formation of new repertoire will begin to demystify the world of creative collaboration. This project will closely examine the collaborative interactions and relationships between musicians, observing the impact that performers have on the creation of new music and discerning how the performer’s role may impact the generation of content. To help analyze collaboration, I propose four different modes of interaction between composer and performer: Artistic, Personal, Inspirational, and Logistic. Artistic interactions are any exchange from the creative hivemind that results in a new concept or idea. Personal interactions are an exchange of ideas or concepts that stem from an acknowledged connection to a single collaborator’s, or the collective group’s, personality. Inspirational interactions are responses to a source of inspiration, such as an admiration of the collaborator’s previous work or a collective idea that stems from an outside source. Logistic interactions involve responses to organizational, administrative, or musical orchestration issues. These modes of interactions are semi-open concepts that coexist and occasionally interact in a continuum of ongoing collaboration. Analyzing creative interactions within collaboration is necessary to develop the conversation on collaborative interactions. The modes of interaction will help musicians find more effective ways to advance, cultivate, and direct creative collaborations.
