Fast pace, high scoring, and highly skilled movements significantly contribute to the overall attractiveness of this sport. Although offensive opportunities can emerge from numerous sources, the key instrument by which players translate the majority of the basketball-specific movements into points is the shooting motion (e.g., free-throw, 2-point, 3-point). For this reason, having one or more players capable of securing open scoring opportunities with high shooting proficiency can be of critical importance for the overall team success. Therefore, placing emphasis on the development of optimal shooting motion has been a primary focus for many basketball coaches. In the lay literature, there are as many different coaching cues for the enhancement of shooting performance as there are coaches. Those cues include but are not limited to greater knee bend, proper follow-through, optimal elbow flexion, greater shooting arc, etc. Although they may be greatly effective, there is a lack of scientific literature addressing the differences in kinetic and kinematic characteristics between proficient and non-proficient shooters as well which variables have the greatest contribution to the successful shooting outcome.
