In particular, the prelude has been an important compositional style for French composers from Louis Couperin to the present day. Unmeasured preludes, in which the duration of each note is allowed to the performer, were utilized as introductory movements in harpsichord suites beginning in the 17th century in France. Louis Couperin was the first to adopt the genre, and harpsichord preludes were used by many later composers until 1750s. These works will be discussed alongside some of the major French preludes in the piano repertoire.
