A Comprehensive Design for Molière's 'The Miser' through Costumes, Lights, and Set

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The present thesis aims to develop the scenographic design of The Miser; one of the most famous French plays written by Molière. The play is based in Paris, France, where its main character Harpagon is portrayed as a miser. Classified as a comedy, this masterpiece has gained significant importance worldwide due to its accurate portrayal of obsession with money, manipulation, and greed in French society in the 17th Century. I decided to focus on how to effectively represent the unique cultural and social elements of the play, with a particular focus on its artistic representations and cultural influences in French society, by examining Molière’s use of references such as the authority the nobles had back in the 1600s. This research also focuses on the technical aspects of design, analyzing the practical considerations of creating a visually stunning and functional stage environment. By examining the use of space, color, texture, and lighting, we explore how the design can contribute to the overall mood, tone, and emotional impact of the play and how visual design can contribute to the play's impact and meaning, while also highlighting the importance of theater as a platform for cultural expression and social critique.
