Collegiate Baseball Players’ Perceptions of the Climate and Their Adaptive Baseball Behaviors

The purpose of this study, grounded in the Achievement Goal Perspective Theory (AGPT) and a Caring framework, was to develop an adaptive baseball behavior measure, and to pilot it to examine the relationship between collegiate baseball players’ perceptions of the climate to their engagement in these optimal baseball behaviors. Baseball players (N = 127) completed measures assessing perceptions of team climate (Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire, Caring Climate Scale) and the newly created Baseball Behaviors Scale. Regression analyses revealed that athletes’ perceptions of a higher caring and task involving climate accounted for approximately 24% of their total baseball behaviors.
