The present study investigates the processing of gender agreement with coordinate noun phrases in native speakers of Spanish and English-speaking second language (L2) learners of Spanish. In Spanish, nouns are assigned a grammatical gender (masculine/feminine), and adjectives must agree with the noun in gender. The masculine gender is argued to be a morphological default or ‘elsewhere’ form. The feminine gender is considered to be marked and is thought to encode additional morphosyntactic information specifying its feminine value. Featural markedness has been linked to both native speaker and L2 learners’ grammatical processing in Spanish. For instance, when two or more nouns with different gender values are conjoined, default morphology is argued to play a role as agreement can be resolved by using a default masculine adjective.
