Abstract
dc:description.abstractRecent technological advancements in generative artificial intelligence and large language models are prompting many questions across academia and scholarly publishers, especially those surrounding plagiarism, intellectual property, authorship, and creativity. These advancements are changing common practices all throughout the academic publishing industry, but as a production editor at the University Press of Kansas, I am primarily interested in editorial tools using artificial intelligence and their ability to copyedit a manuscript before it is typeset into its final form. In this thesis, I perform an in-depth analysis of Thrix, an artificial intelligence tool created to correct and standardize references and bibliographies. I assess the tool’s ability to copyedit references for scholarly work, paying special attention to its error introduction rate, its identification of missing publication information, and its adherence to The Chicago Manual of Style. The result of this study is valuable insight for academics and scholarly publishing professionals alike in understanding how these AI tools might be consistently and reliably implemented across editorial publishing processes in the future.
