EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PERFORMANCE OF CHINESE PIANO DANCE MUSIC

This paper introduces the historical background, musical characteristics, performance practice, and composer analysis of Chinese piano dance music. These areas are introduced through three examples, Xie Geng's Nishang Yuyi Song, Huang Anlun's Celestial Musician from the Dream of Dunhuang piano suite, and Ding Shande's Xinjiang Dance No.2. The paper explores how the piano conveys emotions in Chinese dance music, emphasizing the importance of incorporating dance rhythms into piano performances. It aims to inspire pianists, promote a unique art form, and encourage more musicians to interpret and share Chinese piano music on a global scale. Chinese dance music comes in various forms, with rich cultural connotations and unique artistic expression. It is a challenge for performers to understand and convey the emotions involved. Having grown up learning piano and Chinese dance, I have developed a deep understanding of the close connection between the two. The piano conveys the essence of dance through techniques like legato and glissando, while its rhythms vividly bring dance imagery to life. Whether it is the lively Xinjiang Dance, the elegant Nichang Yuyi Dance, or the mysterious Dunhuang Dance, the fusion of music and dance enhances the expressive and contagious nature of the performance. Musicians must fully grasp the cultural context to truly express the emotions and imagery embedded in the music.
