By conducting a quantitative content analysis of the nine highest grossing animated films each from a different decade of Disney's existence, data were obtained on the distribution of male and female characters in Disney's animated films and Disney's gender portrayals of those characters. Through coding the appearances, social roles, and behaviors of major male and female characters in each film, this study found that there is an overrepresentation of male characters, that males and females are largely portrayed in gender stereotypic ways in Disney animated films, and that Disney's gender portrayals are changing over time.","abstract_html":"This study examined the portrayal of gender roles and stereotypes in Disney animated films over the course of The Walt Disney Company's history.
