THE EFFECT OF THE COMMONGROUND SOFTWARE AND THE DECISION SUPPORT CENTER ON PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT-CENTERED COMMUNICATION

Words=148 Located in a community mental health center, the first Decision Support Center in psychiatry used peer support and an internet-based software program, CommonGround, to assist consumers in decisional uncertainty around psychiatric medication use and to foster shared decision-making between the consumer and prescriber. A pre-test/post-test design randomly assigned consumers to an experimental group for four months or a control group. Several measures of patient-centered communication were used to evaluate the medication consultation transcripts including a consumer and prescriber survey. A one-way multivariate analysis of covariance was not significant for the combined dependant variable of the measures at time two, while controlling for the measures at time one. Secondary analysis showed that patient-centered communication increased when the prescribers referenced the CommonGround report and personal medicine. With only 58.1% of the prescribers in the experimental group consultations acknowledging the CommonGround report, further evaluation of the Decision Support Center is needed.
