Occupational Engagement Scale for Creative Students: Initial Validation and Development

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The Occupational Engagement Scale for Creative Students (OES-CS; McKay & Krieshok, 2007) is the first measure of occupational engagement specifically for creative adolescents. Initial reliability and validity of the OES-CS has been investigated in creative high school students who participated in the Counseling Laboratory for the Exploration of Optimal States (Kerr & McKay, 2007). The OES-CS is a brief, coherent measure that appropriately measures occupational engagement, the behavioral feature of the Trilateral Model of Adaptive Career Decision Making (Krieshok, Black, & McKay, in review). The OES-CS is a 28-item measure that consists of three scales: Attunement, Enrichment, and Exploration. All three scales are strongly correlated with Global OES scores. Internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficient) for the OES-CS was .90. Test-retest reliability revealed moderate consistency (r =.782, p<0.1). Global OES-CS scores were positively correlated with Openness to Experience, Extraversion, and Conscientiousness (as measured by the NEO PI-R; Costa & McCrae, 1992); and Achievement and Sentience (as measured by the Personality Research Form; Jackson,1974). Openness to Experience and Achievement account for 19.4% of the variance in Global OES-CS scores. This study contributes to the construct validity for occupational engagement (Krieshok, et al., 2007). The OES-CS is used as a primary outcome measure for the career interventions designed specifically for the creative students who participate in the Counseling Laboratory for the Exploration of Optimal States (CLEOS Project).
