Development of polymer bonded magnets with enhanced magneto-mechanical properties for high temperature and aggressive environments

The present research relates to the identification of an impervious high temperature coating and a coating method that provides an oxidation and corrosion resistance to the Nd-Fe-B magnetic powders. The processibility, thermal and environmental stability, corrosion resistance and magnetic properties of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) bonded Nd-Fe-B magnets can be enhanced by treating the Nd-Fe-B powders with a suitable silane coupling agent prior to blending with the polymer and subsequent molding of the composite. The coated rare earth powders are ready for injection molding when highly packed and the coating is capable of withstanding mechanical shearing during the polymer blending process. The research also relates to improvements in processability and mechanical performance of thermoplastics bonded rare earth magnets by blending a functional liquid crystal polymer with polymer matrix. The addition of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) to PPS-bonded Nd-Fe-B magnets provides enhanced processability, improved stiffness, and improved creep resistance without any loss in magnetic properties of the magnet. The beneficial function of the surface modification of the Nd-Fe-B by organometallic compounds is further enhanced by the LCP in the polymer bonded magnets formulation. These benefits are expected to be useful in making magnets that are suitable for load-bearing applications in high temperature and chemically-corrosive environments where commercial permanent Nd-Fe-B magnets are not useable.
