Improvements on low-cost high-resolution CT system

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Computed tomography (CT) is an x-ray based inspection technique used to analyze the three dimensional structure of an object. The goal of this thesis is to show that good CT image quality can be achieved with low cost CT systems while maintaining high resolution and keeping the collection time for a scan to a minimum (s;I hour). The CT system that is used for most of the work in this thesis is a third generation CT system, which was developed from an existing real-time inspection system. We have also modified this system to be able to do volumetric computed tomography, with some constraints that will be discussed later. We have evaluated the effect of a large number of system parameters, including source spot sizes, x-ray converters, camera types and image processing algorithms, on the CT image quality.
