A finite element analysis method for the crimping process of the piston-slipper component in hydraulic pumps

The hydraulic pumps and motors as part of hydraulic transmissions are widely used in mobile equipment for construction, mining and agriculture. The piston-slipper component is the critical part of a hydraulic pump which relies on the proper working condition of this component. A crimping process is usually used to connect the piston and slipper together. Like most of the machining processes that involve large deformation, the high stress created in the slipper and piston during this process is always a serious concern. This study develops a finite element method aimed at analyzing the stresses, strains and load forces associated with the crimping process. Solving the large plastic deformation and contact problems are the focus of this analysis. This method can be used in the optimization of the piston, slipper and die design. The commercial finite element package ANSYS has been used to simulate the crimping process on SGI computers. This simulation procedure developed can be used to obtain a better understanding of the crimping process, in particular, to determine the effect of the geometry of the die and piston-slipper component on the results of the process.
