Automatic or controlled: What is the nature of the encoding processes leading to perceptual implicit memory?

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Whether the encoding processes necessary for perceptual implicit memory (as indexed by a perceptual fluency task) are automatic or controlled was tested using the load insensitivity and intentionality criteria of Yantis and Jonides (1990). In Experiment 1, which manipulated perceptual load (1, 2, or 4 words) at encoding, somewhat ambiguous results were found: Although there was no reliable effect of encoding load, there also was not reliable implicit memory for Load 4 words. In Experiment 2, which manipulated the intention of participants to process or not process words at encoding, clear support for a controlled processing view was found: A reliable effect of intention was found and there was not reliable implicit memory for words that participants did not intend to process at encoding. The results were discussed in terms of two plausible alternative interpretations-an account suggesting perceptual implicit memory arises from both controlled and automatic processing at encoding and an account suggesting that perceptual implicit memory arises from only controlled processing at encoding. It is concluded that the controlled processing account provides the most complete accounting of the results. Finally, it is concluded that the findings of the present study fit best with processing theories of implicit memory.
