Pavement thickness design using reclaimed hydrated Iowa class C fly ash as a base material

The purpose of this study is to develop a pavement thickness design method using reclaimed hydrated class C fly ash as a base material. Reclaimed fly ash from four Iowa sources was investigated, in an untreated state as well as stabilized with lime and raw fly ash. Standard tests, including proctor density, gradation, and specific gravity were performed to compare the reclaimed fly ash to standard earth materials. Extensive strength testing was conducted using California Bearing Ratio and unconfined compressive strength tests. Results of strength testing were correlated to structural layer coefficient for use in a flexible pavement design method. A general test and design method was also developed for reclaimed class C fly ash not specifically included in this study.
