A study of the structure of v-B2S3 and sodium thioborate glasses

This thesis discusses several spectroscopic techniques which were used to explore the structure of the sodium thioborate glasses. Interest in these glasses have increased recently due to the fast ionic conduction behavior found in the sulfide based glasses. However, before much work can be done on the conductivity of these materials, it is important to understand the structure and how this influences the conductivity. This work explores the structure of these glasses using Raman spectroscopy and Neutron scattering techniques. Structural models are developed from these techniques which include a large macromolecular anion comprised of ten tetrahedral boron groups. This anion may explain the anomalous conversion rates between the trigonal and tetrahedral boron groups. In addition to these techniques, a section is included to be used as a reference for future students using extented x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) to explore the structure of these glasses. Part of the analysis of the EXAFS data is a data reduction process which can influence the final outcome greatly. It is this data reduction process that is described here in order to guide new students through this process.
