Shared-space housing: Theoretical background for the potential cost savings associated with the shared consumption of housing

This thesis will establish that the phenomenon of shared consumption does exist and show how it can be applied to the housing market. Empirical research will focus on determining whether or not there are savings to be realized by moving toward the shared end of the continuum. This research will be accomplished by developing (on paper) a parcel as a single-family subdivision and as a shared-space development and comparing the cost per housing unit. It is hoped that this study will serve as a springboard for the marketing of a shared-space alternative which will ultimately better serve the needs of housing consumers who are currently having difficulty finding homes.
