Reduce, reuse, redefine: An interactive framework for repurposing packaging materials through a sustainability-focused craft kit system using traditional and digital methods

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study explores recycling and upcycling methods currently available to consumers, focusing on sustainability-focused tools and resources to repurpose consumable materials. Investigations into material utility and repurposing were conducted through traditional crafting techniques, as well as the development of supplemental instruments and digital learning tools. A multi-modal learning environment, established as the Caravan Craft Kit System, promotes consumer-driven methods for reusing materials found in homes, offices, and community spaces with increased accessibility and community connections regarding environmental education. The Caravan Craft Kit System offers a practical and scalable solution for material reuse, particularly in areas under-served by traditional recycling facilities. Additionally, the proposed system framework supports environmental awareness by encouraging consumers, designers, and manufacturers to re-imagine how products are used after the initial purpose ends. By combining physical exploration of disposed material goods through physical crafting suggestions and digitally supported resources, the Caravan Craft Kit System highlights the potential for small-scale, localized actions and their contributions to global waste reduction efforts. Ultimately, the proposed framework empowers designers and individuals to take an active role in addressing waste challenges and explore creative material repurposing.
