Relationship between having a child with a disability and/or chronic illness and family/child characteristics, family stress, and child enrichment opportunities

The major goal of this study was to examine the relationship between having a child with a disability or chronic illness and: 1) family/child characteristics, 2) family stress, and 3) child enrichment opportunities. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY: 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992) the influences of maternal age, race, family structure, family/household size, residence, gender, birth order, family income, mother's education, occupation, job satisfaction, health limitations, availability of reading materials, activities of enrichment, and adult-child interactions on children with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses were explored. All children (in the NLSY sample) with disabilities and/or chronic illness and a randomly selected sample of typically developing children (N=2,532) were used to examine the first relationship. The sample consisting of children with and without disabilities and/or chronic illnesses (N=2,514) was matched on maternal age and race to examine the second relationship. The third relationship was examined by matching children with and without disabilities and/or chronic illnesses (N=2,220) on maternal age, race, and family income. The results showed systematic relationships between race, gender, family structure, mother's job satisfaction, mother's health limitations, availability of reading materials, and adult-child interactions and child's disability and/or chronic illness.
