El diptongo / hiato como rasgo contrastivo: un estudio perceptual con los hablantes de herencia de español

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

In Spanish, diphthongs and hiatuses represent two distinct types of vocalic segments (Schwegler, Kempff, & Ameal-Guerra, 2010). However, there are examples of words in which the pronunciation of the vocalic sequence as either a diphthong or hiatus serves as a contrastive feature, as in the example of Ley / Leí (Face & Alvord, 2004; Hualde & Prieto, 2002). For heritage Spanish speakers, whose first language is not necessarily their most-used language, how is the distinction between diphthong and hiatus perceived? Given that these features also exist in English, but in different forms—for example, the existing diphthongs in English differ from those in Spanish—does English exert an influence over the perception of these features in Spanish? This study examines the perception of diphthongs and hiatuses in 11 heritage Spanish speakers with an AXB discrimination task (Lukyanchenko & Gor, 2011). A control group composed of 6 Spanish-dominant bilingual speakers is used. Specifically, this study examines the ability to discriminate between the diphthong / hiatus as a contrasting feature with /a e o/ serving as the nucleus vowel in the diphthongs. A sociodemographic survey was also utilized to examine a possible correlation between discrimination abilities and such extralinguistic factors as English and Spanish usage in heritage speakers. Results indicate that there is not a significant difference in the ability to discriminate between the diphthong / hiatus contrast between the two groups in general. At the same time, the nucleus vowel in the diphthong tokens is a significant factor for the ability to discriminate in heritage speakers. No significant correlation was found between language usage and the ability to discriminate between the diphthong / hiatus contrast. Nevertheless, the findings of this study contribute to the corpus of phonetic perception studies focusing on heritage Spanish speakers.
