Identities on the Page - Literary Gender Performance in US/Latino Immigrant L

Modern Gender Theory proposes that gender is a behavior based construct that is constantly negotiated and renegotiated interpersonally. This behavior is difficult to analyze due to the fleeting nature of behavior and any knowing recording of behavior is bound to be less than authentic (per the male and female gazes, for example). As such, this dissertation extends that concept into the realm of literature. If gender is constructed within interaction, or a performance, authors have the ability to perform gender in any number of ways based on their own intersectional perspective through the characters they create. Literary Gender Performance is a theoretical lens that allows analysis of perceptions of gender long after that behavior has ended as seen through the literature these authors produce. This dissertation is specifically focusing on cis-male and cis-female authors that immigrate from Latin American countries to the United States writing during 1916-2017, illustrating a very specific set of archetypes inevitably inherent to this specific context. This is only meant as an initial step in a much more ample body of scholarship. Here the focus is on the notable differences between these specific groups of authors. Literary Gender Theory should also be useful not only in conceptualizations of gender among other groups of authors with other intersections as well as the perceptions of other social intersections like race, religion, language and sexuality, among many others.
