Finnish media discourses on Calais, France 2016

This research studies the main media discourses and representations of migrants and refugees in Calais, France in the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The topic is related to wider socio-political events that took place especially during the years of 2015 and 2016, when more refugees arrived in Europe than usual especially due to unrest in countries outside of Europe. The data is a collection of news content published online during 2016 related to Calais and migration from France to the United Kingdom. The collected corpus consists of 43 texts accompanied with visual content. The methodology is based on critical discourse analysis and especially Fairclough’s three analysis dimensions, which are the levels of textual analysis, discursive practice and social practice. The analysis includes chronological discussion on the material divided in three main discourses, which are the othering discourse, securitization and border discourse as well as the humanitarian discourse. Additionally general representations of migrants and refugees are discussed. The results show similarities to previous studies emphasizing othering tendencies in media reporting on migration, as well as the different discourses of border and securitization as well as the humanitarian discourse being intertwined in news articles.
