Surface Velocity Measurements at the Aeolotron by Means of Active Thermography

This thesis presents measurements of the water velocity in the first few microns of the viscous boundary layer in the wind-wave facility Aeolotron by means of thermography. An active thermography method was used to create heat patterns, which were visualized by an infrared camera. In contrast to other methods, this approach is a non-invasive method and does not disturb the surface properties. Several algorithms are explored on synthetic sequences as well as on data taken at the Aeolotron to determine reliably surface velocities. In addition, the bulk velocity was measured using acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV). The momentum transfer resistance is determined by combining the bulk and the surface velocity at different wind speeds. The results contradict previous measurements based on trace gases, and therefore require further investigation.
