Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards Leadership Factors Associated with Teacher Attendance

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of teachers and school leaders at a high absentee school and those of teachers and school leaders at a low absentee school regarding teacher absences with respect to the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards Leadership factors. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to conduct this study. A questionnaire, which included items addressing three of the six ISLLC Standards, was sent to two public high schools in Georgia. There were 93 questionnaires completed and returned to the researcher.

The quantitative data analysis from the questionnaires was performed using SPSS and is presented in narrative form with corresponding tables. A request accompanying the questionnaire asked for volunteers to participate in individual in-depth interviews. From this group of volunteers a total of fourteen participants was selected through stratified, purposeful sampling. The researcher conducted the interviews with four teachers and three leadership team members from each school using the qualitative technique of the long interview. Data analysis revealed that teacher absenteeism was lower in the school where teachers reported a high level of practice of the ISLLC Standards. No differences were observed in the self-reports of practice of the ISLLC Standards by the leadership teams in the two schools. The results of this study should be of particular interest to school principals, superintendents, and school board members.
