Multicultural Attitudes of Construction Management Students in a Rural Southern University

<p>Construction management students are situated in a predominantly white male industry. Since the industry is currently becoming more diverse, there is a need for construction management students to be more culturally responsive. Multicultural education is one way that students can be exposed to diverse cultures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of a critical multicultural education curriculum on the multicultural attitudes of construction management students in a higher education construction management program. This research study used a survey instrument along with classroom observations, field notes and a research diary to measure the effectiveness of a 3 day multicultural education intervention in construction management students’ attitudes toward cultural diversity. The results suggest that the intervention was successful at positively changing the measured attitudes of construction management students. Future construction management programs might consider implementing a form of multicultural education into their curriculum in order to positively influence students’ attitudes toward diversity.</p>
