In utilizing critical theory to analyze the culture of consumption in school and in society, this work examines how the individual is becoming increasingly marginalized in a consumer world where the ethic of consumption is constantly reinforced via hegemony. My analysis and examination also considers how schools are becoming more commercialized as standardization and the corporate culture dominate the academic agenda; a trend I contend is producing passive consumers instead of independent, critical thinkers. In order to counter the hegemonic process in society and in school I call for a more holistic curriculum; one that incorporates the mental and physical benefits of running in order to address the needs of the whole child.
