A Study of the Perceptions of Stakeholders Regarding Commercial Fundraising in Georgia's Public Schools

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of principals, teachers, and parents regarding the use of commercial fundraising methods in Georgia's public schools. It was the researcher's purpose to fill a void in the literature regarding the perceptions of school stakeholders, in terms of their perceptions regarding the nature, scope, and general acceptability of commercial fundraising in Georgia's public schools. Accordingly, the researcher used a random sample of principal, teacher, and parent members of school councils of elementary, middle, and high schools across the state. Following a review of literature, the researcher created, tested, and validated a survey instrument to gather the data needed to answer the research questions. The survey was prepared and administered electronically, using an Internet survey service. The nature and scope of the commercial fundraising activities utilized in Georgia were similar to those used nationally, although there were some slight differences in terms of usage rates. The researcher found that the school council members in the sample generally approved of the use of commercial fundraising in their respective schools. Distinctions were discovered between rural and urban systems as to the need for and the ability to effectively utilize commercial fundraising methods. Lastly, a portion of the 2 respondents in the study called for some sort of mechanism through which commercial fundraising activities in public schools could be monitored and controlled.
