This thesis provides a detailed exploration of artwork done for my MFA Exhibition with emphasis on artistic intent, use of metaphor, and the conveyance of knowledge through painting. These components are discussed in comparison to the major movements of expressionism and signature artists of the 20th century such as Vassily Kandinsky, Robert Motherwell, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The philosophers, R. G. Collingwood, Suzanne Langer, and Nelson Goodman are cited to support ideas discussed in this paper.
