Abstract

dc:description

We studied clinically and laboratorially all surgical incisions which occurred during the period between, may 1986 up until October 1987, in order to determine the rate of occurring wound infections and the factors which affect the above rate in a total of 1404 operations, the total infection rate was 342%, while the rate for clean surgical wounds was 2.06%. The duration of operation and the patients age were found to be directly proportional to S.W.I. the infection rate was found to be higher during the summer months than the winter, while the correct application of antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the incidence of S.W.I. enterococci were found to be on the top of the list of bacteria-a proof of the results of the high use of wide spectrum antibiotic in the hospital environment the S.W.I. added 12.69 postoperative days to each patient of this study, while the additional total cost during the above period was estimated to 12,182,400 drs.
