THE MOST THOROUGHLY STUDIED EGGSHELL BELONGS TO THE FRUIT FLY DROSOPHILLA MELANOGASTER (DIPTERA: DROSOPHILIDAE). THE ENZYME PEROXIDASE WAS FOUND TO BE A STRUCTURAL COMPOUND OF THE EGGSHELL AND IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COVALLENT TYROSINE BONDS, BETWEEN THE EGGSHELL PROTEINS AND THE CONSECUTIVE HARDENING OF THE EGGSHELL. THE INSECTS OF ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE, STUDIED IN THE THESIS, ARE THE MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT FLY CERATITIS CAPITATA (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE), THE OLIVE FLY DACUS OLEAE (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE), THE CHERRY FLY RHAGOLETIS CERASI (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) AND THE ALMOND WASP EURYTOMA AMYGDALI (HYMENOPTERA: EURYTOMIDAE), AND THE MAIN GOAL SUCCEEDED IN THE THESIS WAS THE COMPARISON OF THE STRUCTURAL AND BIOCHEMICAL COUNTERPARTS OF THE EGGSHELLS OF THE ABOVE INSECTS.
