Abstract
dc:descriptionSURFACE SEDIMENTS FROM THREE SEMIENCLOSED EMBAYMENTS (ITHAKI, ARGOSTOLI AND ASTAKOS) WAS STUDIED FROM GEOCHEMISTRY, SEDIMENTOLOGY AND MINERALOGY VIEW. THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS 1) THE MINERALS CONSIST MAINLY OF CALCITE; QUART, FELDSPAR, ILLITE AND CHLORITE 2) THREE DISTINCT TRANSPORT MECHANISMS SEEM TO BE REFLECTEDIN THE FACTOR GROUPINGS A) COARSE FRACTION TRANSPORTED BY SURFACE CREEP AND/ORROLLING B) THE VERY FINE SAND AND THE COARSE SILT BY ROLLING AND SUSPENSION AND C) THE FINE SILT AND CLAY BY SUSPENSION. THE GEOCHEMICAL STUDY SHOWED THE SOURCE OF TRACE METALS AND THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH THE MAJOR CHEMICAL PHASES SUCH AS CLAYS DETRITAL MINERALS, ORGANIC MATTER AND FE-MN OXIDES AND HYDROXIDES. FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF HEAVY METAL LEVELS IN SURFACE SEDIMENTS WE USED TWO INDEXPOLLUTION A) "INDEX OF GEOACCUMULATION" AND B) POLLUTION LOAD INDEX (P.L.I.).
