Προτείνεται μια βιοχημική μέθοδος αξιολόγησης της αγγειογένεσης που βασίζεται στο γεγονός ότι κατά τα τελευταία στάδια της αγγειογένεσης απαιτείται η σύνθεση βασικής μεμβράνης (β.μ.) για την ολοκλήρωση του σχηματισμού νέων αγγείων. Ένα από τα βασικά συστατικά της β.μ. είναι το κολλαγόνο τύπου IV το οποίο βρίσκεται αποκλειστικά στη β.μ. Συνεπώς υπάρχει άμεσος συσχετισμός μεταξύ της βιοσύνθεσης του κολλαγόνου τύπου IV και κατ' επέκταση της β.μ. με την αγγειογένεση.
