Προβλεπόμενες (φυσιολογικές) τιμές της σπιρομέτρησης και της καμπύλης ροής/όγκου για τις ηλικίες 7 έως 15 ετών του ελληνικού πληθυσμού
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis study was designed to eliminate the lack of standard values for the spirometry, and the flow/volume curve in the greek population, age 7 to 15 years old. Of the 1603 elementary and high school students examined, 731 boys and 657 girls were included in the study. These children were asymptomatic, not suffering from chronic or acute respiratory diseases or any other condition that could affect the pulmonary function tests and were able to cooperate and perform acceptable efforts. 60% of the children were from urban areas and 40% from non urban areas according to the last greek census taken in 1981. All the children were examined standing and with bare feet. We used a pneumotachograph connected with an X/Y recorder, type lam-15 Fucunda. The FVC, FEV₁, FEV₁%/FVC. MMFR, PEF, MEF₇₅, MEF₅₀, MEF₂₅, tests were computed manually from the hard copy of the X/Y recorder by the author. The FVC was computed from the acceptable effort with the best value, the FEV₁, and the MMFR from the one with FEV₁ best value, and the PEF from the flow/volume curve where it had the best value. The MEFs were computed from the curve with the best sum of FVC + PEF + MEF₇₅. The results were analyzed by electronic computer and logarithmic multiple regression equations created for the predictions of each parameter, based on height and age. We also created tables with the predicted values and the 95% Normal Percentile. We compared our results with previous published data of N. America (25), Europe (46) and Greek spirometer data from the city of Thessaloniki. We found small, 10-15%, but in the most of cases statistically significant differences between our results and the N. American and European ones. This difference appears to have no major clinical significance but may be important in marginal cases and in epidemiological studies. A bigger difference was found in the PEF, which must be attributed to the fact that we measured the PEF by the flow/volume curve and not by a flowmeter. We had a small difference from the Thessaloniki data which became serious at the 13 to 15 years of age, because of an abrupt increasing of the slope in these data. Part of the difference is possibly due to the different instrument used in this study (Vitallograph), but it could not explain the increase of the difference at the referred ages. We conclude that our data are the first published predictive equations formulas and tables with predictive values for the parameters of the spirometry and the flow/volume curve, representative of the total greek population age 7 to 15 years old. The small, but statistically significant differences from published values of European and N. American children, make them useful for the greek lung function laboratories which use pneumotachograph. The publication of the Tables for each age and height make their use simple.
