dc:descriptionForty six patients with idiopathic scoliosis were operated using Harrington distraction rods and posterior spinal fusion, during the last ten years, at the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Ioannina, Medical School. Curve elasticity was preoperatively measured so that the postoperative degree of correction could be predicted. Elasticity measurement was done with the patient on supine position using manual traction. The mean preoperative of the thoracic curves was 60,7° with the thoracolumbar and lumbar curves being 55,7° and 50,6° respectively. Using manual traction, the curves were found to correct down to 33,9° for the thoracic curves and 27,1° and 30,6° for the thoracolumbar and lumbar curves. In surgery, using Harrington distraction rods, further correction was obtained and the mean final curve was measured 22,2° for the thoracic, 19,0° for the thoracolumbar and 21,8° for the lumbar curves. Results showed that the magnitude of final correction was greater for the thoracolumbar curves (mean correction 65,8%) which were followed by the thoracic (mean correction 63,49%) and the lumbar curves (56,9%). In the female patient group (n=33) the magnitude of final correction was greater (67.0%) compared to the male group (n=13) where the mean correction was 53.8%. The technique of manual traction for the assessment of preoperative curve elasticity in idiopathic scoliosis, is proved, from this study, to be a reliable method for the prediction of the correctability of the scoliotic curve using Harrington distraction rods.
