ΔΙΕΡΕΥΝΗΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΔΡΑΣΗΣ ΚΑΤΑΛΥΤΩΝ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΝΑΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΚΕΡΑΜΙΚΗΣ ΠΑΓΙΔΑΣ ΑΙΘΑΛΗΣ

THE WIDE APPLICATION OF CERAMIC SMOKE TRAP SYSTEMS TO DIESEL- POWERED VEHICLES HAS BEEN SO FAR SIGNIFICANTLY DELAYED BY A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH CERAMIC TRAP REGENERATION, I.E . THE PROCESS OF SELF-CLEANING OF THE TRAP BY MEANS OF AUTOIGNITION OF THE COLLECTED SOOT. THE RELATIVELY HIGH EXHAUST TEMPERATURE LEVELS REQUIRED FOR THE PROCESS, ARE SELDOM OCCURING DURING CITY DRIVING. A MORE REALISTIC APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM OF THE TRAP REGENERATION CAN BE BASED ONTHE REGENERATION ASSISTANCE BY MEANS OF CATALYSTS. MORE SPECIFICALLY, MIXING OF CATALYTIC FUEL ADDITIVES IN DIESEL FUEL, LEADS TO SIGNIFICANT DECREASES IN REGENERATION TEMPERATURE LEVELS. THE APPLICATION OF CATALYST IN CERAMIC TRAP SYSTEMS, PRESENT A NUMBER OF SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS, THAT ARE EXTENSIVELY ANALYZED. THE STUDY INVESTIGATES A NEW MECHANISM FOR THE CATALYTIC COMBUSTION OF SOOT IN THE TRAP CHANNELS. A COMPUTER CODE, BASED ON EMBODYING THIS MECHANISM IN A WELL KNOWN REGENERATION MODEL WAS DEVELOPED AND EXTENSIVELY TESTED WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS TAKEN FROM THE AUTHOR'S AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE. THE MODEL IS PROVED TO EXPLAIN THE BASIC FINDINGS FROM CATALYTICALLY COATED TRAP REGENERATION, AS WELL AS REGENERATION BY USE OF FUEL ADDITIVES IN VARIOUS ENGINE OPERATIONMODES, TRAP LOADING LEVELS AND FUEL ADDITIVE DOSIMETRY. THE MECHANISM DEVELOPED BY THE AUTHOR FOR CATALYTIC REGENERATION, INCORPORATES A STABILITY CRITERION,WHICH IS ESSENTIAL FOR UNDERSTANDING AND PREDICTING THE DIFFERENTIATION OF CATALYTIC ACTIVITY IN DIFFERENT ENGINE OPERATION MODES. FINALLY, THE APPLICATION OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED MODEL AND COMPUTER CODE FOR OPTIMIZATION PURPOSES, SHOWS THAT THE QUEST FOR THE OPTIMAL CATALYTIC FUEL ADDITIVE IS NOT JUSTIFIED. IN FACT, A SUCCESSFUL TRAP VEHICLE SYSTEM BASED ON THE USE OF CATALYSTS, CAN ONLY BE DESIGNED BY EMBODYING TWO SUBSYSTEMS OF CRITICAL IMPORTANCE, I.E. A POSITIVE REGENERATION SYSTEM TO KEEP A SAFE, LOW TRAP LOADING LEVEL THROUGHOUT THE USEFUL LIFE OF THE SYSTEM, AND A TRAP SAFETY SYSTEM PROTECTING THE SENSITIVE TRAP WALLS FROM OVERHEATING. IN SUCH A SYSTEM, THE ONLY FURTHER REQUIREMENT WOULD BE THENON-TOXICITY OF THE FUEL ADDITIVE USED. THE ABOVE- MENTIONED PHILOSOPHY LED TOTHE QUITE SUCCESSFUL ELBO/LAT APPLICATION IN THE 110 IKARUS BUSES OF THE EAS PILOT FLEET IN ATHENS.
