dc:descriptionTHE PROPOSERS HAVE BEEN USING AE TECHNIQUES BOTH ON MICROSCALE (COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES) AND ON A MEGASCALE (STABILITY OF GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURES ANDEARTHQUAKE PREDICTION. FOR THE INVESTIGATION AND EVENTUAL PREDICTION OF FAILURE PROCESSES. CONCERNING THE LATTER A NETWORK OF 3 MONITORING STATIONS CONSISTING OF PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCERS IN DEEP BOREHOLES, CONDITIONING AMPLIFIERS, VHF FM TRANSMITTERS, MULTIPLEXERS/TIMERS AND SOLAR CELLS, HAVE BEEN INSTALLED AROUND THE TIP OF THE CORINTH GULF NEAR AN SEISMICALLY ACTIVE GEOLOGICAL FAULT, WHICH CONSTITUTES A PERFECT SEISMOLOGICAL LABORATORY. A CENTRAL RETRIEVING STATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PATRAS IS RECEIVING THE SIGNALS FROM ALL STATIONS., PERFORMING REAL-TIME FFT PROCESSING AND COMPARISON WITH PREVIOUS RESULTS BY MEANS OF AUTOCORRELATION TECHNIQUES, IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A SUITABLE ALGORITHM TO CORRELATE THE LATTER WITH IMPENDING EARTHQUAKES-WITH ENCOURING PRELIMINARY RESULTS. THE PRESENT PROPOSAL AIMS AT THE FULL DEVELOPMENT OF SAID NETWORK, REFINED TECHNIQUES FOR SIGNAL RETRIEVAL, TRANSMISSION AND PROCESSING AND THE EVENTUAL PREDICTION OF MAGNITUDE, EPICENTRE AND HYPOCENTRE OF IMPENDING EARTHQUAKES AT REASONABLE TIME IN ADVANCE.
