Abstract

dc:description

In the present study intubation of the whole lacrimal drainage system was performed by using silicone tube in 84 adults with obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. Intubation was achieved under local anaesthesia and an otorhinolaryngologist contributed to the operation. The surgical procedure was based on Quickert's technique transformated by us. The silicone tube remained over 4,5±2 months (mean time ± SD) and the follow-up period was 25±17 months (mean time ± SD). In 54 cases the nasolacrimal duct was found to be easily irrigated (complete repair) and in 8 cases the irrigation of the duct showed a decrease of the patency; however these 8 patients reported a subjective improvement of their epiphora. According to these results patency was achieved in 73% of the cases. If the cases with an obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct but without suppuration of the lacrimal are considered (36 cases), the success rate of the technique increases to 83%. The high success rate of this method of intubation of the lacrimal drainage system, by using a silicone tube in the cases of obstruction of nasolacrimal duct in adults, proves the usefulness of this simple and bloodless method of intubation as an alternaline procedure to dacryocystorhinostomy.
