The first part includes the examination of 200 individuals (400 eyes) aged from 20-93 years. A gradual decrease of the endothelial cell density was found in the first decades. We observed a significant decrease between 50-60 years. After the age of 60 a gradual decrease of endothelial cell density is also observed. The second part includes the examination of 190 patients who underwent cataract surgery in University Eye Clinic of Ioannina. We set the above in three groups. A) ICCE, B) ICCE+ACIOL and C) ECCE+PCIOL. We compared the percentage of the endothelial cell loss, the operated and non operated eye of every patient. The results suggest that there is a 28,11% end cell loss in (A) 23,11% in (B) and 22,80% in (C) group. We observed a significant increase of pleiomorfism the operated eye in all groups. Τρόποι εξέτασης του ενδοθηλίου και αρχές της κατοπτρικής μικροσκόπησης. Στην συνέχεια γίνεται σύντομη αναφορά στον φακό επαφής του Eisner και τα ευρήματα της κατοπτρικής μικροσκόπησης. Σκοπός της εργασίας είναι η μελέτη των μεταβολών του ενδοθηλίου με την πρόοδο της ηλικίας και μετά από εγχείρηση καταρράκτη. Εξετάσθηκαν 390 άτομα στη Πανεπιστημιακή Οφθαλμολογική Κλινική Ιωαννίνων. Για το πρώτο σκέλος εξετάσθηκαν 200 άτομα ηλικίας από 20-93 ετών. Διεπιστώθει ότι με την πρόοδο της υγείας παρατηρείται σταδιακή μείωση του αριθμού των ενδοθηλιακών κυττάρων. Επίσης παρατηρήθηκε απότομη μείωση μεταξύ της ηλικίας των 50 και 60 ετών και σταθερή αύξηση του πλειομορφισμού με την πρόοδο της ηλικίας. Για το δεύτερο σκέλος εξετάσθηκαν 190 ασθενείς οι οποίοι χωρίστηκαν τρεις ομάδες ανάλογα με τον τύπο της εγχείρησης. Παρατηρήσαμε ότι στην πρώτη ομάδα ΑΑΦ (απλή αφαίρεση φακού) η απώλεια των ενδοθηλιακών κυττάρων ήταν 28,11% στην δεύτερη ομάδα. ΕΠΘ [με ενδοφακό πρόσθιου θαλάμου] ήταν 22,80%. Επίσης παρατηρήθηκε αυξημένος πλειομορφισμός στα χειρουργημένα μάτια εν σχέσει με τα αχειρούργητα.
