Abstract

dc:description

The purpose of our study was the epidemiological investigation of four virus diseases (cytomegalovirus disease, herpes simplex type I and II infection, rubella and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and toxoplasmosis in pregnant women of North-Western Greece. Antibodies against the above infections agents (except herpes simplex virus) were determined by enzyme linked immunoassay. Antibodies against herpes simplex virus type I and II were detected by solid phase fluorescence immunoassay. Women were divided into two groups. Four hundred women were included in group A and their immune status was investigated once during pregnancy. One hundred twelve women were included in group Β and seroinvestigation was done once every pregnancy trimester, so seroconversion was able to be detected. Eighty per cent of 512 women were found seropositive to cytomegalovirus, forty one per cent to toxoplasma gondii, eighty eight per cent to herpes simplex type one and two and eighty four per cent to rubella virus. No woman was found seropositive to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome virus. Analysis of the results according to parity showed no difference between primigravidas and multigravidas. Analysis of epidemiological data of seropositive women was attempted according age, socioeconomic status, work history, blood transfusions, home animals and history of abortions. The samples from women of group Β were examined for seroconversion. The seroconversion rate for cytomegalovirus antibodies was 18 per cent, for toxoplasma gondii antibodies was 6 per cent, for herpes simplex antibodies was 7 per cent, and 24 per cent for rubella antibodies. Seroconversion for acquired immunodeficiency virus was not detected. The seroconversion rates showed the necessity of massive screening of women of North-Western Greece before pregnancy and close follow up during pregnancy of seronegative women.
